Northern Bells is a five piece indie-rock outfit hailing from Brooklyn via Ohio, Portland, and Maryland. A reincarnation of the fledgling lo-fi collective In Cadeo, Northern Bells creates an autumnal medley of indie and pop rock sensibilities. They've been celebrated as a more bombastic version of The National, combining the addictive melodies and epic crescendos of Annuals andThe Arcade Fire with a sprechgesang baritone lyricism reminiscent of Leonard Cohen & Jeff Tweedy.
Northern Bells is a collective of veterans from the Brooklyn music soundscape. Jared P. Scott (vocals, guitars) toured with The Hold Steady & Art Brut while in the post-punk trio Demander. He has recorded and toured with Franz Nicolay of The Hold Steady & Brain Viglione of The Dresden Dolls. Pete Sustarsic (drums) also plays in Oberhofer. Fresh off a tour with Matt & Kim, Sustarsic was heralded by Relix Magazine as “the best drummer at Lollapalooza". Dan Neustadt (keys) toured with The Hold Steady and played keys on their album Heaven is Whenever. A founding member of Anti-Social Music, Neustadt has also shared the stage with Wyclef Jean and played with World/Inferno Friendship Society. Chris Loxely (cello) has played his signature string landscapes with countless bands including Akron/Family and Ponyhof. Travis Tonn (bass) also plays with The Library is on Fire and was a founding member of Rails To Russia (w/ Eytan Oren of Eytan & The Embassy).
The smart songwriting skillfully alternates between brooding and anthemic to create a decidedly intimate listening experience as showcased in Keep it in the Dark - co-produced by Girls Against Boys' Eli Janney ofThe Soft Pack, Illinois, Ryan Adams & Wilco – the debut full-length record hits the streets in December 2012.
